Alastair is a Research Consultant with theIDLgroup who brings skills in project planning and management, budget monitoring and information management. He has recently completed an MSc in Agriculture and Development at the University of Reading, focusing on sustainable agriculture, food security and climate change. Alastair designed and implemented a participatory research project on the impacts of conservation agriculture on the livelihoods of smallholder farmers in Northern Tanzania. The findings have helped to inform applied agricultural research and extension practices in Farmers Field Schools within the region. Alastair has strong report writing, design and editing skills and was requested to co-author a report on Conservation Agriculture in Northern Tanzania as part of FAO’s series on Sustainable Crop Intensification.
Alastair is experienced in working within multi-disciplinary teams where he has fulfilled project coordination, budgeting, administrative and information management roles. He worked for a year in rural India, working with an NGO that specialised in service provision and advocacy for tribal communities. His role focused on capacity development of the Community Based Rehabilitation and Behaviour Change Communication teams and included the review of organisation policies and the design of monitoring and evaluation systems.
Alastair is interested in enabling smallholder farmers to improve their livelihoods through the use of productive and sustainable agricultural technologies and the potential of farmer organisation to improve market access and income generation.
