Claire Ireland is an environment and development specialist with strong analytical and policy influencing skills. Claire has a broad range of experience in the environment and natural resource sector, including Strategic Environmental Assessments (SEA) and sector wide agricultural programmes. Linking local and global environmental perspectives to poverty reduction processes is fundamental to her approach. She has designed, reviewed and evaluated livelihood and donor programmes. Claire is an experienced facilitator who has supported both policy and institutional reform processes from a poverty reduction perspective. She lived and worked in Africa before joining IDL in 2003.

  • Engagement at senior levels in government; facilitating multi-stakeholder processes; linking civil society, government, donor and research organisations; working with community based organisations in rural areas;

  • Environmental policy and management for sustainable development, focusing on the contribution of environmental and natural resource assets to sustainable economic growth;

  • Facilitation of participatory poverty research and analysis of the relationships between poverty and environment to inform pro-poor policy; and

  • Livelihoods assessments of poor and vulnerable communities including assessment of trends, coping strategies and impact of development interventions on livelihood outcomes.
